This article explains what Account Owners and Contract Owners can do in Personio and how Administrators can add, change, or remove them. It also compares Account Owners, Contract Owners, Payroll Owners, and Administrators.
If you have subscribed to Personio Payroll, you need to add a Payroll Owner. The Payroll Owner can contact Support for any payroll-related questions.
Account Owners and Contract Owners
- You can assign up to two Account Owners and two Contract Owners. If you have Premium Support, you can assign up to eight Account Owners.
- One person can hold both Account Owner and Contract Owner roles.
- The Personio account creator automatically becomes an Administrator, Account Owner, and Contract Owner.
- You cannot assign a single Account Owner or Contract Owner role to multiple people. Each role must belong to one individual. We don't allow shared accounts under our General Terms and Conditions.

Personio sends invoices to the email in the Billing information tab, not to the Contract Owner's email address.
Add an Account Owner or Contract Owner
- Go to Settings.
- In the Account & support section, click Support owners.
- Click the Account Owners or Contract Owners tab.
- Click the Add account owner or Add contract owner field.
- In the new window, enter the required details. Personio can only contact you using one of the phone numbers you enter. Make sure the phone number matches the one shown when you make a call.
- Click Add to finish the process.
Note:
Only Administrators can add or remove Account Owners and Contract Owners. If no Administrators are available, find out how to assign a new Administrator.
Change an Account Owner or Contract Owner
To change who holds the Account Owner or Contract Owner role, you need to remove the previous person and add the new one.
If you only have one Account Owner or Contract Owner, add the new person first. Personio requires at least one owner at all times.
- Go to Settings.
- In the Account & support section, click Support owners.
- Click the Account Owners or Contract Owners tab.
- Remove the Account Owner or Contract Owner you want to replace.
- Add the new Account Owner or Contract Owner.
Edit an Account Owner or Contract Owner
To edit an Account Owner or Contract Owner, click Edit next to the employee's name in the Account Owners or Contract Owners tab. Make your changes and save them.
Remove an Account Owner or Contract Owner
- Go to Settings.
- In the Account & support section, click Support owners.
- Click the Account Owners or Contract Owners tab.
- Select the employee you no longer want as an Account Owner or Contract Owner.
- Click the bin icon in the top-right corner.
- Click Yes to remove the Account Owner or Contract Owner.
You cannot remove an Account Owner or Contract Owner if they're the only employee with this role because Personio requires at least one. First, assign a new employee to the role. Then, remove the previous Account Owner or Contract Owner.
