This article explains how to manage goals and subgoals.
The goals section
The Goals section in the Performance & Development area is the central place where you can view, create, and edit goals. In this section:
- All employees can access their goals.
- Supervisors can access goals created for their reports.
- Administrators and employees with edit rights for this section can access goals created for everyone in the organization.

The All employee goals tab

This functionality is only available to Administrators and employees with edit rights for Goals.
The All employee goals tab shows all goals created across the organization. In this tab, you can:
- View and access all goals assigned to all employees in the organization. You can see goals assigned to both active and inactive employees.
- Find specific goals using an array of filters.
- Select and delete goals in bulk.
Find and view goals
To find a goal or a group of goals, combine the available filtering options as needed:
- Enter a keyword in the Search bar.
- Refine your search using the Employee filters: Department, Office, Hired after, Hired before, Position.
- Combine the Employee filters with the Goal filters: Start month, End Month, Status, Created by, Includes organizational goal.
Personio filters the list according to the options you select. The list includes active and inactive employees.
Tip You can access a goal's details page by clicking on the goal's name.
Select and delete goals in bulk
To select and delete goals in bulk, follow these steps:
- Tick the checkbox next to the relevant goals' names. To select all goals in the list, tick the checkbox next to Goal name.
- Click Delete goals.
- A window appears asking you to confirm your choice. Click Delete goals.
Work with goals and subgoals
Comment in a goal
You can comment on a goal to track or discuss progress (for example with a direct report).
To add a comment on a goal, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. Under Comments, click Write your comment... and input your text.
- Click Submit.
Comments are ordered chronologically. Your new comment appears at the top of the list.
Tip You can edit your comments at any time. Click the three dots icon next to the comment you want to modify and select Edit.
Delete a comment in a goal
If necessary, you can delete your own comments:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page appears. Click the three dots icon
next to the comment you want to delete, and select Delete.
- A message appears asking to confirm the deletion. Click Delete.
Update the progress of a goal
After you have created a goal, you can update its status and progress. This allows you to track an employee's performance over time.
To update the progress of a goal, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- On the relevant goal, click Update progress.
- The goal's overview window appears. Click the status button.
- Select a value from the list (Not started, On track, Off track, Completed, Cancelled, Deferred).
- To update the progress for each subgoal, input a new value under Achieved.
- Click Save.
Duplicate a goal
After you create a goal, you can duplicate it and assign it to a group of employees.
Your role and access rights determine who you can duplicate goals for. To learn more, read View and edit access in the Performance & Development area.
Notes
▶︎ You can assign a duplicated goal to no more than 25 employees.
▶︎ You cannot reverse a goal's duplication.
▶︎ Personio does not duplicate the status, progress, comments, and history of a goal.
To duplicate a goal, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. On the upper right, click the three dots icon
and select Duplicate.
- The goal's duplication page opens. Under Employees, select the employees you want to create the goal for.
- Optional: Edit the goal's name, Time frame and Period.
- Optional: To allow the employee to edit the goal and its subgoals, click the Allow employee to edit details of this goal checkbox.
- Optional: Tick the Allow employee to update progress of this goal checkbox.
- Click Duplicate.
Edit or delete a goal

▶︎ You can edit or delete a goal if one of the following conditions is true:
- You are an Administrator or you have edit rights for goals.
- The goal is assigned to one of your reports.
- The creator of the goal has enabled the option for you to edit the goal.
▶︎ You cannot edit the goal's time frame after the goal is created.
You can edit a goal at any time. You can change the goal's name, and if the goal is for another employee, decide to let them update the goal's progress.
To edit a goal, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. On the upper right, click Edit goal.
- The goal's editing page opens. Under Goal name, you can input a new name.
- Optional: To allow the employee to edit the goal and its subgoals, click the Allow employee to edit details of this goal checkbox.
- Optional: Click the Allow employee to update progress of this goal checkbox.
- Click Save.
To delete a goal, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. On the upper right, click the three dots icon
and select Delete.
- A message appears asking to confirm your choice. Click Delete.
Tip If you are an Administrator, you can delete goals in bulk under the All employee goals tab.
Edit or delete a subgoal

▶︎ You can edit or delete a subgoal if one of the following conditions is true:
- You are an Administrator or you have edit rights for goals.
- The subgoal is assigned to one of your reports.
- The creator of the relevant goal has enabled the option for you to edit the goal and its subgoals.
▶︎ Subgoals' measurements cannot be edited after creation.
To edit a subgoal's name, description, and category, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. Next to the relevant subgoal, click the pencil icon
.
- The subgoal's editing page opens. You can update the subgoal's Name, Description, and Category.
- Click Save.
To delete a subgoal, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. Click the bin icon
next to the relevant subgoal.
- A message appears asking to confirm your choice. Click Delete.
Export a goal and view a goal's history
You have the option to export a performance goal as a PDF document. This document shows all the information that is on the goal's details page at the time of the export.
To export a goal to a PDF document, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. On the upper right, click the three dots icon
and select Export document.
Note Personio exports the PDF file to the Documents tab of the relevant employee profile. The document is displayed under the Performance category.
View a goal's history
In the goal's history, Personio records all actions performed on a goal and its subgoals. The history displays the author, date, and time of the action.
To access a goal's history, follow these steps:
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the relevant employee.
- Click the arrow icon
next to the relevant goal.
- The goal's details page opens. On the upper right, click the three dots icon
and select History.
- On the right, a drawer window containing the goal's history appears.
A new entry appears in the history every time an employee:
- Updates the goal's progress.
- Edits the goal's weights.
- Creates, edits, or deletes the goal, its subgoals, and the comments.
