Notes
▶︎ The new Goals feature within the Performance & Development area is being gradually rolled out, and it will reach all customers with the Performance & Development package by the end of 2022.
▶︎ The Goals feature in the Performance tab of the employee profile will be discontinued at the end of 2022. Starting in January 2023, the Goals feature will only be available with the Performance & Development package.
This article explains what goals and subgoals are in Personio, and how to configure them.
What are goals and subgoals in Personio?
In Personio, goals are objectives assigned to employees, to be completed within a set time frame. They are a powerful instrument to measure employee performance and engagement over time.
Subgoals are the criteria by which you can measure progress on a goal. When creating a subgoal, Personio allows you to choose one of the following measurements:
Measurement | Definition | Example |
Yes / No | Subgoal achieved or not achieved | Create new training materials |
Number | Quantitative | Reach a sales target |
Percentage | Qualitative | Increase employee satisfaction |
Configuring goals and subgoals in Personio offers the following benefits:
- A record of monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly employee goals.
- Automatic calculation of flexible salary components based on agreed goals.
- Definition of any number of binary, qualitative, and quantitative subgoals.
Configure goals and subgoals
To configure goals and subgoals, follow these steps:
Step 1: Create a goal
- Navigate to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select the employee you want to create the goal for.
- Click Create new goal.
- Input the goal's Name.
- Select the Time frame (Month, Quarter, Half year, Year, or Custom), then select the Period and the Year.
- If you are creating a goal for a person other than yourself, you can tick the Allow employee to update progress of this goal checkbox to enable the option.
- Click Create.
The goal's details page appears. You can now add subgoals.
Tip After you create a goal for another employee (for example your direct report), you can both view it and comment on it by default.
Step 2: Add subgoals
To properly track progress on a goal, you need to add at least one subgoal to it, and choose the correct subgoal's measurement. To do so, follow these steps:
- In the goal's details page, click Add a subgoal.
- The Subgoal creation page opens. Add a Name and a Description in the respective fields.
- Select the Subgoal Measurement to choose how to measure progress on the subgoal. If you select Number, you can set the exact target value to be reached.
- Select the Subgoal's Category to define what type of responsibility is associated to it (Individual, Team, Department, Company).
- Click Create.
The subgoal appears on the goal's details page. You can keep adding subgoals, as needed.
Step 3 (optional): Set custom weights for your subgoals
Goals can be used to calculate bonus payments. By default, Personio bases the calculation on an equal weighting of subgoals. If instead, you want to choose how a bonus payment is distributed between different subgoals, follow these steps:
- In the goal's detail page, click the three dots icon
and select Edit weights.
Note The option appears only after creating two or more subgoals.
- The custom weights window appears. The option to Enable Custom Weights is activated by default.
- Under Weight %, enter the contribution of each subgoal to the goal total.
- Click Save.
Notes
▶︎ The sum total of the subgoals' weights must be 100.
▶︎ You can only use whole, positive numbers, and numbers up to a decimal point (for example: 10, 20.4).
▶︎ If you add or remove a subgoal after configuring custom weights, you need to manually readjust the weights.
