This article explains how to set up and assign primary supervisors, additional supervisors, and general employee relationships in Personio. This helps you organize your company's structure in the way that works best for you.
Before you start
- You need edit permissions for Person information to set up and assign supervisors and other relationships. You also need edit permissions for the sections in the profile where you locate these attributes.
- Primary supervisors use the existing preset attribute, so you don't need to create a new attribute. You only need to assign them.
- You can create up to five custom attributes for different types of additional supervisors, such as "Project Supervisor" or "Training Coordinator". You can also create up to five custom attributes for different types of general relationships, such as "Mentor" or "Onboarding Buddy".
- Relationship assignment:
- You can assign one employee as a primary supervisor to an employee.
- You can assign up to five additional supervisors of one type per employee. For example, an employee can have five different "Project A Supervisors".
- You can assign up to five employees from each type of general relationship. For example, an employee can have five different "Mentors".
Set up supervisors and employee relationships
Primary supervisors
Primary supervisors use the Supervisor preset attribute. This means you only need to assign a primary supervisor to an employee.
Additional supervisors and general relationships
To set up an additional supervisor or a general relationship:
- Go to Settings.
- In the People section, click Personal information.
-
Select the relevant profile section.
Click + Create > Create attribute.
- Choose the relationship type:
- For an additional supervisor, click Additional supervisor.
- For a general employee relationship, click Person.
- Enter a name for the attribute.
- Choose the section for the attribute and save your changes.
- Follow the setup wizard to create a new employee role. You can do this by creating a new role or copying an existing role. If you skip creating the role during the setup wizard, you need to do it later.
- Add the relationship holder to the role (for example, the additional supervisor).
-
Configure reporting line access for the role.
Optional: grant permissions to the role. For each permission category in the Permissions tab, select the appropriate access level for View, Propose, and Edit. To grant permissions to the supervisor's reports, select Reporting line or Relationships.
Assign supervisors and employee relationships
To assign a supervisor or relationship to an employee:
- Go to the employee's profile
- Click the Personal info tab.
- Click Edit.
- Select the person in the relevant attribute:
- For a primary supervisor, use the Supervisor attribute.
- For an additional supervisor, use the custom attribute you created (for example, "Project Supervisor").
- For a general relationship, use the custom attribute you created (for example, "Mentor").
- Save your changes.
Tip:
Use the People list or employee data import to assign supervisors and employee relationships in bulk.
