This article explains how to log in to Personio with two-factor authentication (2FA). It also explains how to set up 2FA on your mobile device and what to do if you switch to a new device.
Your administrator might turn on 2FA for your account. If it's active, you need to enter a second code along with your password to log in to Personio. You can use an authenticator app to generate this code or choose to receive it through email.
Set up 2FA using an authenticator app
To set up 2FA using an authenticator app:
- Download an authenticator app to your mobile device. We recommend using Google Authenticator, but any authenticator app works.
- Open the app on your mobile device.
- On another device, open a browser and go to "domainname.app.personio.com/login"
- Log in with your email address and password.

When the barcode appears, scan it with your authenticator app.
- Enter the code from the app into the browser to complete the setup.
Use the email option for 2FA
If you're having trouble with the authenticator app or would prefer to use email, you can receive your 2FA code through email:
- Log in to "domainname.app.personio.com/login" with your email address and password.
- On the 2FA screen, select the option to receive the code by email.
- Check your inbox for an email from Personio.
- Enter the code from the email into the login screen to complete the process.
Transfer 2FA to a new mobile device
If you switch mobile devices, follow these steps to set up 2FA again:
- Download the authenticator app onto your new device.
- Find someone with administrator rights in Personio.
- Ask them to access your profile and reset the authenticator.
- Log in to Personio at "domainname.app.personio.com/login" using your email and password.
- Scan the new barcode with your authenticator app.
Fix time zone issues in 2FA
If the time zone on your device doesn’t match the time zone in the authenticator app, the 2FA code mightn't work. To fix this issue:
For Android devices:
- Open the 2FA app and go to the settings menu.
- Look for an option related to "time correction for codes".
- Synchronize the time settings.
For iOS devices:
- Go to your device settings and set the date and time to update automatically.
- Make sure location services always allow access to your 2FA app.
After fixing the time settings, ask your Administrator to reset your authenticator.
