Before you start
- You need an Administrator role to configure reporting line access.
Understand reporting line access
Primary supervisors get access to both direct and indirect reports. Additional supervisors and general relationships only get access to direct reports. Direct reports have this person as their supervisor. Indirect reports are the direct reports of direct reports. Learn more about the differences between primary supervisors and other employee relationships.
You can select one or many supervisor types for a role. For example, select both primary supervisors and additional supervisors if you want both to access data for the employees who report to them.
Note:
When you select more than one supervisor type, the label in the Permissions tab changes. For example, it changes from "Reporting line" to "Relationships (2)" or "Relationships (3)" depending on how many you have selected.
Configure reporting line access for primary supervisors
Personio uses the primary supervisor relationship as the default reporting line. When you select Supervisor, primary supervisors get access to their direct and indirect reports.
To configure reporting line access for primary supervisors:
- Go to an employee role.
- Go to the Permissions tab.
- In the top-right corner, click the People icon.
- Under Default, select Supervisor (this is the employee's primary supervisor).
- Save your changes.

Configure reporting line access for additional supervisors and other employee relationships
Personio uses the primary supervisor relationship as the default reporting line. To use an alternative reporting line, you need to select it manually. When you select an additional supervisor, employees with this supervisor type get access to data for their direct reports.
To configure reporting line access for additional supervisors and other employee relationships:
- Go to an employee role.
- Go to the Permissions tab.
- In the top-right corner, click the People icon.
- Under Additional supervisor, select the relationship types you created.
- Save your changes.
