In Personio, Supervisors can create goals for themselves and for their direct reports. Employees can create goals for themselves only.
Create a goal as a supervisor
To create a goal as a supervisor, follow the steps below.
Set details
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Select a direct report to create a goal for, or select yourself.
- Click Create new goal to open the goal creation drawer.
- Enter the Goal Name.
- Select the Time frame ( Month, Quarter, Half year, Year, or Custom), then select the Period and the Year.
- To allow the employee to edit the goal and its subgoals, activate the Allow employee to edit details of this goal checkbox.
- Activate the Allow employee to update progress of this goal checkbox to enable the employee to update the goal status and the progress of individual subgoals.
- Click Next to go to the Define measurement step.
Define measurement
In step two of the creation process, define how goal achievement is measured by choosing to enable custom weights or create subgoals.
- To define how much an individual subgoal should contribute to the overall goal progress, activate the Enable custom weights checkbox.
- If you do not want to create subgoals, click Create to continue to the next step.
Go to the "Choose employees and review" heading below. - To track progress towards an overall goal, create subgoals by clicking Add subgoal.
- The New subgoal creation fields appear. Add the Subgoal name and a Description in the respective fields.
- Under How will you measure progress?, select the subgoal's measurement. If you select Number, you can set the exact target value to be reached.
- Select the subgoal's Category to define what type of responsibility is associated with it ( Individual, Team, Department, Company).
- If you activated the Enable custom weights checkbox, the Custom weight field is visible. Input the subgoal's custom weight.
- Click Next.
Choose employees and review
In step three of the creation process, you can select the employees to which this goal should be assigned. You can only select your direct reports. In step four, review and confirm the goal creation.
- In Choose employees, select the relevant employees. You can filter the list, type an employee name in the search bar, or click Select all to select all employees in the list.
- Click Next to continue to step four of the goal creation process.
- Review your configuration for the goal and its subgoals.
- Check that the goal is assigned to the right employees.
- If your configuration is correct, click Create goal.
Tips
After you create a goal for a direct report:
▶︎ Both you and your direct report can view the goal and comment on it.
▶︎ You can edit the goal at any time and decide whether to allow your direct report to edit the goal and to update its progress.
Create a goal as an individual employee
To create a goal for yourself as an individual employee, follow the steps below.
Set details
- Go to Performance & Development > Goals.
- Click Create new goal to open the goal creation drawer.
- Enter the Goal Name.
- Select the Time frame ( Month, Quarter, Half year, Year, or Custom), then select the Period and the Year.
- Click Next to continue to the Define measurement step.
Define measurement
In step two of the creation process, define how goal achievement is measured by choosing to enable custom weights or create subgoals.
- Choose to define how much an individual subgoal contributes to the overall goal progress, by activating the Enable custom weights checkbox.
- If you do not want to create subgoals, click Create to complete the creation process.
- To track progress towards an overall goal, create subgoals by clicking Add subgoal.
- The New subgoal creation fields appear. Add the Subgoal name and a Description in the respective fields.

Tip:
If you add two or more subgoals, you can order them as you like. Click on a subgoal's handle icon and drag the subgoal to the desired position.
