This article explains the Account Owner and Contract Owner roles in Personio. It explains what they can do and how to add or remove them. It also compares Account Owners, Contract Owners, and Administrators.
If you have subscribed to Personio Payroll, you need to add a Payroll Owner. This person can contact the Payroll Operations team for any payroll-related questions.
Overview of Account Owners and Contract Owners
- You can have up to two Account Owners and two Contract Owners.
- One person can be both an Account Owner and a Contract Owner.
- The Personio account creator automatically becomes an Administrator, Account Owner, and Contract Owner.
- Each Account or Contract Owner must be one person. We don't let people share these roles. We don't allow shared accounts under our General Terms and Conditions.
Learn about Account Owners
- Only Account Owners can ask Personio Customer Support about account and technical questions.
- They can give temporary access to the account for support if needed.
- Account Owners manage GDPR tasks.
Learn about Contract Owners
- Contract Owners are Personio's point of contact for financial matters. For example, they manage invoicing, renewal, and upgrades.
- They can ask the Growth & Success team about subscription requests.
- Contract Owners manage GDPR tasks.
Note:
Personio sends invoices to the email in the Billing information tab. It doesn't send invoices to the Contract Owner's email.

Tip:
We recommend assigning Account Owners and Contract Owners the role of Administrator. This ensures they can read our Data Processing Agreement (DPA). They can also change account settings as Administrators. Learn more about access rights for Administrators.

Add or remove Account Owners and Contract Owners
Add an Account or Contract Owner
- Go to Settings.
- In the Support section, click Support.
- In the Account or Contract Owners tab, click Add account owner or Add contract owner.
- Enter the required details in the new window. We can only contact you using one of the phone numbers you enter. Make sure the phone number matches the one shown when you make a call.
- Tick the checkbox to agree to our Data Privacy Statement.
- Click Create to finish the process.
- Optional: you can change the contact details of an Account Owner or Contract Owner. To do so, click Edit next to the employee's name.
Note:
If you need to add a new Account Owner but can’t contact our Support team through Help & Feedback, use our Help Center form. We can't answer product questions submitted through this form for data privacy reasons.
Remove an Account or Contract Owner
- Go to Settings.
- In the Support section, click Support.
- Click the Account Owners or Contract Owners tab.
- Select the employee you no longer want as an Account or Contract Owner.
- Click the bin icon in the top-right corner.
- Click Yes to remove the Account Owner or Contract Owner.
You can't remove an Account Owner or Contract Owner if they're the only employee with this role. First, assign a new employee to the role. Then, remove the previous Account Owner or Contract Owner.
