This article explains how to set up maternity protection correctly. Personio automatically calculates the legally required maternity protection period if you enter an expected date of birth for an employee’s child.
Setting Up Maternity Protection
Click on the Personal info tab in the employee’s profile, then on Edit and click on the Add child button in the HR Information section. This opens a new window. Enter the baby’s name and sex (if known) and the birthdate as calculated by the physician. Next, check the box for activating the automatic calculation of the maternity protection period.
If it is already known that the employee will have a multiple birth, also check the relevant box to automatically extend the maternity protection period. Next, select the absence calendar that you would like to add the resulting maternity protection period to, and confirm your entry. Finalize the editing process by clicking on Submit.

As the actual date of birth usually differs from the previously calculated date, you will often need to edit this date later.
Managing Maternity Protection
Managing maternity protection is as easy as configuring this setting. To do this, go to the employee profile > employee information and select Edit. Instead of clicking on the Add child option, simply edit the existing entry by clicking on the pencil icon next to the previously entered date of birth.
Enter the actual date of birth and check the Multiple birth and/or Early birth options, if applicable, to have the maternity protection period automatically adjusted according to legal requirements. Exit the edit mode by clicking on Submit.
